The dealer says the car was sold as seen. Does that remove my rights?

No. A dealer cannot exclude or restrict your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 with a "sold as seen" sign or a clause in its paperwork. It can only rely on faults it specifically pointed out to you before the sale, or that an examination you actually made ought to have revealed.

Can I reject a used car I bought three months ago?

Not straight away. After 30 days the dealer is usually entitled to one attempt at a repair or replacement first. If the repair fails, you can then reject the car under the final right to reject, although for a car the dealer may deduct something for the use you have had.

I bought it privately. Do I have any rights?

Fewer. A private seller must have the right to sell the car and it must match its description, but the requirement of satisfactory quality applies only to sales by a business. If the seller misdescribed the car, for example its mileage or service history, you may have a claim.

The car is on hire purchase. Who do I complain to?

The finance company, because it is usually the party that supplied the car to you. If it does not resolve the complaint within eight weeks, or you disagree with its final response, you can refer it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Can I get my own garage to fix it and send the dealer the bill?

Be careful. The dealer is normally entitled to the chance to repair the car itself. If you have repairs done elsewhere first, you may struggle to recover the full cost. Put your request for a repair in writing and give the dealer a reasonable time before going elsewhere, unless the car is unsafe to drive back.

How long do I have to make a claim?

A claim for breach of contract in England and Wales generally has to be issued within six years. After six months from delivery, though, you will need to show the fault was present at the time of sale, and that gets harder the longer you wait.
