The claim is completely wrong — surely the court will notice and throw it out?

No. If you do not respond, no one examines the merits at all. Default judgment under CPR Part 12 is granted because the deadline passed, not because the claim was checked and approved. A wrong claim you ignore becomes a valid judgment you owe.

I never received the claim form. Do I still get a CCJ?

You can, because service is judged by the rules on deemed service, not by whether you personally read the documents — claims are validly served at your last known address in many circumstances. If a judgment was entered on a claim you genuinely never saw, that is a strong basis for a set-aside application, but you must apply promptly once you find out.

If I just pay the claimant directly now, does the case stop?

Paying the full amount claimed (including the court fee and any interest claimed) before judgment generally brings the claim to an end, but do it in writing, keep proof, and check the claimant confirms to the court that the claim is settled. If judgment has already been entered, pay within one month and apply for a certificate of satisfaction — that is what gets the entry removed from the register.

Can I be sent to prison for ignoring a small claim?

No. A small claims judgment is a civil debt, not a criminal matter, and you cannot be imprisoned for owing it. The consequences are financial and practical — the CCJ on your record and the enforcement routes against your wages, bank account, goods, or property.

What if I admit the debt but genuinely cannot afford to pay?

Use the admission form to propose instalments and complete the statement of means honestly. The court can order payment at a rate that reflects what you can actually afford, and a judgment being paid as ordered is far better than one being enforced. Does responding mean I have to stand up in court?

Usually not for a long time, and often never. Most defended small claims are referred to the free telephone mediation service first, and many settle there.
