Can I really do this without a solicitor?

Yes — and 31–59% of UK employment tribunal claimants have no solicitor at the hearing, depending on the data source (MoJ hearing survey 2018; HMCTS case records 2023–25). There are no filing fees. Employment tribunals do not automatically order the losing party to pay the winner’s legal costs. Costs orders are possible, including where a party or representative behaves abusively, disruptively or otherwise unreasonably, or a claim had no reasonable prospect of success. Bringing a claim in good faith does not remove every costs risk.

They're designed to be taken seriously — by your employer, their solicitor, and the tribunal.

Is this legal advice?
